Visitors and Nonmember Groups
Guests and
Ship Rentals
Rookery welcomes visitors and encourages interaction with the wider Star Trek roleplay community. Being welcome on the sim is not the same as being a member of Rookery, and this page explains exactly where that line sits.
Visiting Rookery
Visitors are welcome in areas designated for public access. You may explore the sim, visit public shops and welcome facilities, meet the community, and attend public events when those events are open to visitors.
Members may also invite guests to take part in specific roleplay, missions, events, or activities. In those circumstances the guest is taking part under the invitation and responsibility of the hosting member or command. An invitation to one activity does not create general access to Rookery resources.
The full policy is Article 2 of the Community Charter.
Nonmember Ship Rentals
Rookery ships exist primarily for the use of the Rookery community. When availability permits, selected unassigned ships may also be made available to nonmember groups for temporary private use.
A nonmember ship rental provides access to one designated ship for a period of four hours. The rental begins and ends at the reserved times. At the end of the four hour period, the group is expected to conclude its activity and vacate the vessel so it can be returned to Rookery use.
A rental provides temporary use of the vessel only.
This is not an in character rental. An in character renter takes up residence within the Star Trek universe and becomes part of the community surrounding it. A nonmember ship rental is temporary use of a vessel by an outside organization and creates no such presence.
What a Rental Does Not Include
A rental does not provide any of the following:
- Rookery membership
- Access to other ships or facilities
- Use of the reservation system beyond the purchased reservation
- A permanent presence on the sim
- Representation before the Captains' Council
- Command status within Rookery
- Any continuing claim to the vessel
Rental groups remain independent organizations and are not considered Rookery commands. Rental groups may not represent themselves as a Rookery command, as operating from Rookery, or as affiliated with the Rookery Federation.
Availability and Priority
Availability is determined by Rookery. Member activity and the needs of the Rookery community always take priority over nonmember rentals.
Payment reserves the approved vessel for the approved four hour period. It does not guarantee future availability or establish priority for future reservations.
Rentals are arranged one reservation at a time. Rookery does not hold standing or recurring bookings for nonmember groups. Repeated rentals create no schedule, no claim, and no expectation of continued access. After a third rental, the Admiralty will open a conversation about membership before approving a fourth.
The Admiralty may decline or cancel a rental when necessary to protect the sim, its resources, or its community. If Rookery cancels a paid reservation before use through no fault of the renting group, the rental fee will be returned.
Conduct and Condition
The group using the vessel is responsible for the conduct of its members and guests during the reservation. Rookery rules concerning conduct, metagaming, godmodding, builds, scripts, and use of sim resources remain in effect.
Reservations are approved for a stated number of participants. Combat systems, scripted attachments, rezzed objects, and anything else that consumes sim resources are subject to the same limits that apply to Rookery commands. The Admiralty may require heavy items to be removed or left unworn.
During an approved reservation the vessel is private to the renting group and Rookery members will not interrupt the session. The Admiralty may enter at any time to check on the sim.
Groups must leave the vessel and surrounding area in the condition in which they found it. Temporary objects, props, effects, or other items brought in for the session must be removed when the reservation ends.
Groups that fail to vacate at the end of the reservation, or that leave the vessel in unacceptable condition in the judgment of the Admiralty, may be denied future rentals and may forfeit the fee. Rookery may end a session that runs past its reserved window and return the vessel to Rookery use.
Fees and Cancellation
Rental rates and the current list of vessels available for rental are published separately and may change. Ask the Admiralty for current rates and open slots.
A group that cancels at least forty eight hours before its reservation may reschedule or be refunded. A group that cancels later than that, or does not appear, forfeits the fee. Once a window is close, the time is held for that group and cannot be offered to anyone else.
If your group later joins Rookery, the rental fee comes off what you pay to join. The fee is not there to make money. It is there so that a reservation means something, and so that a group trying us out is already part way toward being here properly.
How to Request a Rental
- Talk to the Admiralty. Reach us through Discord or the contact page with your group name, roughly how many people, and the day and time you want.
- We confirm the vessel and the slot. Availability depends on what member commands are doing that week, so the answer comes from us rather than from a calendar you can book blind.
- Pay to hold the reservation. The four hour window is yours once the fee is in.
- Turn up, play, and leave it as you found it.
Or Skip the Rental
A group that finds itself regularly renting Rookery ships is encouraged to consider membership. Membership is how groups become part of the community and receive the broader privileges that come with contributing to it: a permanent berth, a seat on the Captains' Council, and a hand in the shared stories rather than four hours at a time on the edge of them.
Four hours. One ship. One reservation. When the reservation ends, so does the access.
